I had tried that, it was a pay-as-you go phone with no associated name (a burner phone) – I can’t prove I owned the number… I had it before they enacted the rule to assign it to anyone by name. But fortunately, I may have the numbers stored on another phone. I’ve used the number for 20+ years tho…

You have rights to your previous phone number to have it transferred to a new device, and new service. I have moved mine around for decades. After my late mother passed I had a thought of moving to my childhood number. When I was young all I had to remember was 30844 because it was a long distance call to dial outside the OXford 69 exchange. Had to dial 0 for the operator and have them make the connection.
