Hi Ann,
Anyone is welcome to attend.
I wanted to tell the story at the DA meeting in Seattle but we were so crunched for time that it wasn’t really something to fit in.. But the president has done an incredible job of taking a league with an entire board that quit (he wasn’t president then) , the old board had taken the money, and the equipment, and just about anything else that makes a league, and turned that mess around to where he had 40% more kids than their highest registration ever in the history of the league, great community “buy-in” and plenty of everything, money, volunteers, resources, kids, parents, the whole deal…We were on the phone A LOT, tons of emails, and I made a couple of visits to help them get a plan together and the structure in place to get things headed in the right direction. The rest of it was all them. He and their board have done a great job, and – they are expanding into Juniors and maybe softball this year if they can get the fields ready…(he’s trying to scare up $90K in grants to refurbish some old fields that have been abandoned by the city). He’s done a great job, especially with the limited resources of a small town… I’d like to get him up here in Spokane….

Wow I wish I could be there that would be fantastic to hear. I will be visiting a friend with ALS. He happens to have been a LL umpire with my husband at the BB Western Regional in 2016. So sad. I wonder if Mike Ray might attend?

Thanks Ann!
I appreciate the input - as for getting Board members, maybe you can show up to our meeting in Dayton, I’ll buy you lunch. The guy that is speaking there as part of league development did an amazing job putting a board back together after they all quit “en masse” because of Little League’s statement on “Black Lives Matter”. He was left with no board – ZERO, no bank account, and no equipment and within a year had the best season and year ever for the league AND is expanding. How he did it was amazing and is going to tell the story as part of the presentation…. Meeting is at the Best Western in Dayton in one of their meeting rooms.
Thanks

JP,
My name is Ann Leggett and I am part of WA D4. We didn't get the chance to formally meet during the WA state DA meeting, but I was the one sitting next to Glen. You sure have your work cut out for you and I am sorry you have had to take on this additional work but hope great things will come out of the challenge. I have not been on district staff long so please take any of my suggestions as that, suggestions trying to support you. If I am off base, or you think I'm off my rocker ,or you have tried it and it doesn't work, that's OK! Trash the email :)
- For the slide about League Development and Travel ball, instead of being negative about travel ball, keep things positive about LL. If people want to leave travel ball clubs but they hear the local LL bashing travel ball they likely won't want to be part of that environment. Is it possible to build bridges instead of making the gap wider? I don't know. Are there any stats to support kids burning out on baseball at a young age when they play travel ball vs LL?
- Slide 24 - do you have ideas to combat items on this slide? If not, do you plan to use this meeting to gather and share ideas?
- Slide 25 - there is typo.
- Slide 26 - why not try starting sandlot teams? A little less formal and the kids umpire themselves. Maybe start the younger divisions in sandlot just to get some excitement around LL?
- Slide 27 - how does the district getting $600 benefit the leagues? Maybe putting the request into that perspective will help motivate the leagues to get the ASAP plan done by 4/1. Maybe you tell them that money is spent on pins for district tournaments (or whatever it will be used for).
- What ideas do you have to help the leagues recruit board volunteers? Our area is struggling with this as well. Blasting an email to people doesn't yield much. When sign-ups were in person we had the chance to meet people, start building a relationship, and personally ask them about volunteering. The personal ask is usually the best but with online signups, we lose the community and connection with people.
Good luck, I hope your meeting is successful! Ann Leggett

Well,
I’m trying to get the District better organized and motivated… I have attached the PowerPoint I put together for this… we have rented a hotel conference room in Spokane and are having lunch catered Sat Oct 30th, 10:00 if any of you have a need to visit Spokane… - and have been pounding on the leagues to get a representative there come “heck-or-high-water”. I think we will have everyone represented, but I gotta do something… they just are “under performing” and need some “attitudinal” adjustments… We didn’t have a District Tournament in D13 this year… not enough interest or participation…. And other stuff that’s not good… This is my first draft at a powerpoint we are going to use on the 30th…
District 5 is very different…

District 13 isn’t very old – maybe 10 years? I don’t remember any titles … but my memory may be going, as well. I think someone at West Region could tell you.

Hi All,
A question for the State LL Historians… does anyone remember the last time (if ever) Dist 13/ Spokane had a state championship in any division baseball or softball?
