Here in District 8, for both regular season, and previous District and State Tournaments at the youngest Softball level, we normally use two different types of fields:
- Turf infield. Because the pitching rubber is at 35’ instead of 40’, and the field isn’t pegged for 35’, we put down a heavy thicker pitching rubber with a non-skid gripper on the underside that works great on turf. It stays in place from the pressure of the pitching motion. But if someone were to come along and try to slide into it, it will move so that it doesn’t result in an injury. We do the same in the bullpens.
- One field we have used is grass, with a grass infield and clay baselines and pitching area. The leagues put a portable mound on it for Baseball. When we do Softball on this field, we try to ensure the infield grass is very short. AND we pound in a spiked pitching rubber at 35’ since grippers won’t work on clay (like they do on turf). The bullpens here are grass, so we pound in a pitching rubber at 35’ from the plate.
We also use the double-wide orange and white safety bases at Softball, and have started to recommend this for baseball this season given—but not required since it’s a teaching thing and will take time.

One league has proposed using two standard baseball fields (minus the pitching mound) with a short lawn mowing of the infield. We used this field last year for our District SB 8/10 tournament and it worked out well.
What is your opinion of the subject? Would this be satisfactory to your district as to the rules of infield play?
The leagues that can host are under road construction, do not have fences, have horrible parking or turf infields.
What have your districts done in the past with the younger softball circle and pitching plate placement on turf fields? Have you had to ask for forgiveness for messing with the infield?
My "pay to play" field isn't even available.
