We are pulling into the home stretch with, at most, 5 games remaining. I want to express my sincere gratitude to Gary, Greg, Judy and Alex from District 7 who came over and worked a double header on opening day with Gary Wilder working a third game on Saturday and one more Sunday morning before heading home.

I also want to express my sincere gratitude to Patrick O’Rourke and Mike Doleac from District 9 who came and worked a double header on Sunday and Monday with Mike staying over and working one more Tuesday before heading home.

Finally, I want to recognize Ron VanTassel from District 13. His son and grandson are here with Liberty Lake (D13). Ron is here watching but has graciously volunteered to work games when the schedule allows. Ron has worked a game EVERY DAY of this tournament.

The assistance provided by these umpires has been absolutely invaluable! Their willingness and availability to come help out has made the tournament so much easier on the remaining umpires, even allowing me to take a game off and also move to other fields to bolster other crews.

I really cannot say thank you enough to the 7 “outsiders” that came and worked games! You are rock stars in my book! I want to make sure these umpires are recognized for their contributions and get the credit they deserve at the State UIC meeting this fall.

Subject: Request for assistance...

To All:

Even though I am no longer the UIC for District 12, I am writing to ask for assistance with the 9/10/11 State Tournament. The tournament will start this Saturday and as of the moment I am sending this email there are a grand total of 7 umpires signed up to cover the 5 games on opening day. Literally, two of the games only have one umpire, two of the games have two umpires, and only the last game has 4 umpires. I am asking, actually begging, for any assistance you can provide. I’m not “requesting” a crew of six or four – I am looking for ANY help – even a crew of ONE!

To be perfectly honest, the temperature this weekend is going to be brutal with a Saturday forecast high of 108° F and Sunday at 109° F. I’m begging for help just to keep my own butt out of the emergency room! (that was a joke – sorta!)

You can see by the schedule below what the tournament is scheduled to look like (I hid the names of others already signed up for their own privacy).
