Hi Trikebum! We at Rodeo Loved YOUR QUESTION! I’m going to chime in on this one…I usually try to keep quiet on things… not show people how dumb I am… 😊 Actually you bring up a really really great question. AND we have a great answer for that… First you are correct. The fiber is/was being built out in densely populated areas… BUT they are “underserved areas”. There was some formula that the government used to determine where they fund fiber builds and the areas that are built out are the ones that qualified under the “formula”. This was generally designated via grants to agencies like the Port of Clarkston to do the build. How they determined underserved vs. population is a mystery to me, but I’m sure some smarter guys than me figured out who would get the money to do the builds (yeah right… I watch the news too – I’m guessing that may not be the case when it comes to “guvmint” spending!). BUT here is the GREAT answer… and it will be announced formally in a couple of weeks. Rodeo is doing a massive upgrade on it’s wireless networks beginning in April. We are going to be delivering UP TO 1Gbps (fiber speeds) over wireless… depending on location. You heard right… speeds UP TO 1Gbps. Our primary effort is to produce something that competes with fiber or faster services – but to do it wirelessly…. And without satellite. We think it’s possible with some new technology, and we are willing to invest in it to help folks have options to the various types of broadband out there. To be COMPLETELY HONEST I live outside of the Rodeo Coverage areas out in the boonies… (and yes I am working on fixing that)… BUT, I am a satellite communications engineer, so I looked at all those options and chose Starlink (that and I am an Elon fan)… It was the best option for where I live… SO…We know how it all works and what the average speeds are and stuff like that… We at Rodeo wanted to build something better and a little more affordable… so – we are going to … We think we have engineered a solution that will give you REAL speeds that match up with what Starlink is doing in all places that we serve, AND in some areas of our coverage to do better than 3x speeds that Starlink PUBLISHES. Keep in mind what Starlink PUBLISHES vs. what they actually provide is very different. The RETAIL CONSUMER level of service is published at UPTO 300Mbps … for $129 a month currently. Plus you have to buy their hardware at around $500. It’s a good deal if you have to have something and you can’t get any other service… HOWEVER, Starlink does not ACTUALLY deliver that speed consistently. I have network monitoring running on my Starlink link and it averages about 120mbps DOWN and about 18mbps UP – what THAT means is data coming into my location is at 120mbps down usually, and about 18mbps going UP TO the satellite(s) from my location or “outbound”. SO Starlink is better than most wireless systems, but not as good as fiber… But… We at Rodeo are gonna give you an option (and it’s actually being published on our website now)… you’ll be able on average to do BETTER than Starlink for less money. In fact if you are within 3 Km (about 2 miles) from one of our nodes – you should be able to get speeds up to 1Gbps (which is 3x faster than the Starlink published speeds and almost 9x faster than their actual speeds). So we are gonna try to get those folks in the outlying areas a better solution and not have to wait on Fiber … we may be able to get this done during the summer… we’re gonna start in April, and we will be putting out a survey with the details in a couple weeks to determine where we are going to start in terms of where the customers are that want to test it for us… so be watching for that… So – yeah fiber is being built in densely populated areas… and yeah, we are gonna try to do something about that and get some more bandwidth to those folks that won’t be getting fiber any time soon.
