Hi All Baseball weather made to order.. That's what we've had in Othello the last couple of days. down more than 20 degrees from the scorching heat of the weekend. Lows in the lower 60s and highs in the lower 80s and not a cloud in the sky. Also if you would like to come out for the last couple of games the Quality Inn in Othello has lots of rooms available with teams clearing out. Little League price is down around $110 and includes breakfast- so cheap rooms and breakfast AND its one block away from the fields. don't even need to drive to them. For the rest of the meals, the whole town has some of the best taco trucks and Mexican restaurants I have had in a long time. yes I am eating way too much. plus the concession stand is outrageously good - wow! It was late after the games (around 8:30PM) the other night when I decided I would drive to the other side of town to a taco truck all the locals said was the best. The sun was setting and the air was soft and balmy with the light breeze and no clouds. The sunset was a red glow on the horizon, with the sky turning orange, then purple, then the dark blue growing in the east. I was by myself and thought it would be nice just to sit outside and relax. Being around a lot of people all day wears me out - I can only handle so many folks in a day, Besides, Othello gets to be one of those "sleepy small towns" after 8 PM. The taco truck was parked in a dusty vacant lot on the edge of town. In the vacant city block were a handful of cars parked in the dirt lot. It was getting to be a little past "dusk" and when I opened my truck door the sound of Mexican music from a stereo outside on a table near the truck wafted towards me. The taco truck owners had erected a permanent structure - a canopy made out of a few metal poles and some nsheet metal roofing over 8 or so wooden picnic tables out in front of the taco truck. No restaurant, no floor, just dirt under your feet, the taco truck, and about a half a dozen Little League families with the players still in uniform that were seated around the tables. Three or four younger kids were running around playing tag. On the side of the truck was a menu of about a hundred items - mostly written in Spanish - (Othello is 80+% Hispanic) - some of the items I hadn't seen in years since I lived down near the border in Texas. I carefully selected my dinner, and picked out a picnic table to sit on. As I watched the families, listened to the music, smelled the glorious smell of asada, camerones, and carnitas cooking, I was transported to another place. I felt peaceful, happy, and content seeing happy families enjoying something simple and easy. No video games, no phones, no Kindles, no iPads were out texting or taking selfies, no drama or yelling, just people sitting around talking, eating, and reliving the events of the day. I didn't talk to anyone sitting in my corner. I just listened and watched. Strangers were sharing stories with strangers, and people were being happy. You could see it on their faces, and hear it in their voices. "Civilians" were asking the Little Leaguers about the tournament. and in turn the Little League parents were asking the strangers about the town. As I sipped my Coke from an "old school" glass Coke bottle and ate an extremely satisfying dinner served on a paper plate with a plastic fork and knife, I watched the families and strangers leave one-by-one - everyone said goodbye to each other as they left - as if they had known each other for years even though they had just met at a Taco Truck in Othello. I stayed for another 20 minutes after the last person left, watching the days last hurrah on the sunset. I said my goodbye to the taco truck owners and headed back to the room. It was a good night that could not have been manufactured or planned. As I drove down the deserted streets to the hotel I didn't really have any thoughts which is rare for me. I was happy, full, and content. I slept well. Wanted to say thanks for Dave from the Tri-Cities (Thanks Kim!) for being the anchor at the plate for much of the tournament during the middle stretch of the week. The umpire situation is getting better now that we have fewer games to manage. The City of Othello continues to rock the tournament with perfect field prep and attention to the smallest details around the complex. Add to that, many "unaffiliated locals" are coming out to watch the games. Parents from the community are bringing their kids to watch the games, while older adults who are retired are coming out as well. It's quality entertainment in Othello courtesy of Little League! The games yesterday were outstanding - good baseball and no blowouts. Game Time Change Notification 8-10s

All, We are going make a suggestion to change the TIME of the game on Saturday for the Championship. Several of the parents and managers of teams have asked if we could move it up so they could return home earlier than 9PM on Saturday night. The game was originally scheduled for 6PM, all parties have agreed that 10AM would be more convenient for them. I am OK with this, the umpires are OK with this and the field hosts are OK with this. Is everyone else OK with this? If not we can leave it where it is. at 6PM on Saturday. Originally we had scheduled it later so more people could attend from the local community, and so that kids could rest up from the game the night before. Some managers (losing managers) have commented that to lose a game at 8:30PM and have to return to play the next day at 9:00 AM has been. "difficult". Apparently going home at decent hour trumps that thought, so 10AM is apparently "OK". Your thoughts all? OK to move it up? Regards JP DA WA5/13

I apologize for getting behind on scores. I post to several sites, text the scores to a few people including Jim Portugal, and somehow thought I had done everything. I also don’t look at email often during a state tournament. Tonight sitting at the game I realized I am behind on updating you all. So: Game 5 – Kirkland 6, South Hill 5 Game 6 – Woodinville 9, Mukilteo 0 Game 7 – West Seattle 20, Port Townsend 5 – 3 innings – (loser out) Game 8 – East County 10, South Whidbey 7 (loser out) Game 9 – Mukilteo 16, West Seattle 0 – 3 innings - (loser out) Game 10 – South Hill 14, East County 4 – 5 innings - (loser out) Game 11 – Mukilteo 9, South Hill 1 (loser out) Game 12 – Woodinville 7, Kirkland 4 Tomorrow Kirkland plays Mukilteo Winner plays Friday against Woodinville with a potential if needed double header We are grateful that District 2 came down and did 3 games. District 3 umpires have covered all other games of this tournament.

Good evening all,Today was a very busy day with the 2 rescheduled games being played early this afternoon and then rolling in to all the already scheduled games. It really has been a pleasure to get to know them.Huge shout out to the D4 and D9 umpires who volunteered to come back and help us out with the two rescheduled games. Hi All, Much cooler temps today - maybe 82 at game time this evening. a full 20 degrees cooler than Sunday. Scores from today: Mill Creek 9 Magnolia 4 Kirkland 10 N. Kitsap 1 Bonney Lake 12 West Plains 2 Richland 7 Larch Mountain 5 West Plains and Larch Mountain exit the tournament. Tomorrow has 2 games. Both are loser out. Had an ump from D12 today - hoping to get a couple from D13 on Friday. Things ran pretty smoothly today. JP DA WA5/13

Day 3 - 8-10 State

All, Temperatures have moderated for the balance of the tournament – no more triple digits in the forecast so we are golden. In fact, temps are not supposed to get above 86 until Saturday with most temps around 79-84 during game times. NO rain in the forecast, just clear weather and light winds. I don’t think I could have ordered better baseball weather…if it were possible for me to order weather 😊 We are struggling with umpires. Darrin and crew from D4 came over for games but had to leave unfortunately. They were VERY good and VERY helpful on our busy opening. We do appreciate Kim for sending over an umpire from her District – thanks! D5 only had one ump they have been able to send. We have only been able to get 2 per game for most games and the field umps have been light in experience … but we are making progress. D13 sent two umps for a couple days as well, but those guys just finished their run at Juniors state and had things they had to get back to. Rick and Randy were awesome. Doing 4 games a day is tough with just a couple seasoned umpires. I had a thought while driving back and forth between Spokane and Othello (1 hour and 57 minutes – if you stretch the speed limit a bit – like go 95mph on the back roads)… and that was this; besides the traveling gypsy umpires that are the backbone of most state tournaments, why not make it a requirement that if you send a team to state you also send 2 umpires for 2 days as a REQUIREMENT for each state bound team? Might make leagues work on umpire development too… or is that too much of a burden? Now that I have done 4 tournaments (2 district and 2 state) almost back to back, I am mightily convinced I need to do a better job at umpire development in my leagues. You can have all the pomp and circumstance of a state tournament, but without good and plenty umpiring, it kind of is … well … lacking … (in my humble opinion… and I am talking about my own performance not anyone else’s). Maybe I was just spoiled from the abundance of good umpires we had at Junior State… One of the perks of holding the tournament in Othello is the concession stand. It’s central to all fields (that cloverleaf design for 4 fields) – and a restaurant called “Tacos Mi Casa” is doing the cooking. They are making some killer “street” tacos, burritos, and more. I don’t think I’ve seen a better concession stand anywhere. Fans are getting REAL nachos here baby… they are doing an incredible job and the place smells wonderful during games. The umps are getting fed reeeaaalllll good. 😊 Street tacos are the favorites but they have a big menu. Their breakfast burritos are hand made at the concession stand while you wait. Wow. Just wow. Mmmmmmm I think I am gaining weight… and haven’t had a single hot dog. anyway – on to the scores. >From Monday’s games: Larch Mountain 9 West Seattle 2 Richland 4 Asotin County 1 West Plains 6 Cascades 3 BLS 5 Salmon Creek 1 All were very good games and played well … usually the games – if they did get into “high scoring” happened only in a late inning… most were very close all the way. Today was a loser out day with those finishing getting pins and a big round of applause from the good sized crowds. The city of Othello is just rocking their part of the tournament. The fields are near perfect every minute of every game and the place looks great. Hopefully now that the weather is moderating some of you can come visit. There are rooms now at the Quality Inn in Othello and the LL rate is $110 per night I think. Just tell them you are with the LL Tournament. Regards JP DA WA5/13

Hello all,Rain, Rain go away!! For whatever reason, mother nature decided to give us rain today. Not just any rain, torrential downpour, sideways rain. And it started just as the two 4 o'clock games were finishing. So, we were able to play those 2 games, but unfortunately, had to move the two 7 o'clock games to tomorrow. This decision was not made lightly, but at the end of the day, my UIC and I didn't feel it was safe for the kids to be on the fields in those conditions. I texted with Kit and she gave me the green light to move the two games to tomorrow. All four managers were very understanding and also agreed that moving those games were in the best interest of the players. So, here are the results of the two games we did get in today:Game 14 - Loser outD3 Larch Mountain 3D7 South Highline National 0* this game was very good. Total game time was 56 minutes with no pitching changes. The same 2 pitchers that started the game, ended the game.*Game 11 Loser outD2 South Kitsap Western 6D5 Othello 3*Also a great game. D5 had a chance later in the game to close the gap, but just couldn't get them across the plate.*Shout out to D9 and D2 for sending Umpire crews and also helping us out tomorrow for the rescheduled games!! Hello everyone!!Today has been a very long, but exciting day. We started the morning with Opening Ceremonies which was short and sweet. We did end opening Ceremonies today with a moment of silence, instead of a "first pitch". The young man that was supposed to throw out the first pitch, was one of our Sedro Woolley Little League players. Last year he was diagnosed with bone cancer and this past Tuesday, he lost his battle with cancer at the age of 15. We decided to honor him instead of finding someone else to throw out a pitch. The games today were all action packed and even though some of the scores look a little lopsided, they were all good games. Your players, parents and coaches, for the most part, have been absolutely amazing. All of the players are all former Little League players from District 11. And yes, we have people in banana costumes and flamingo costumes. Lots of music, games for the kids and parents, and a whole lot of fun for everyone. Shout out to Bob Toigo for his visit today! All, I have a correction to make from yesterdays Asotin County v Magnolia game it was ACLL 3 Magnolia 13. (Thanks Stacy). Today's Games: Mill Creek 5 - West Plains 3 Magnolia 8 - Bonney Lake 7 North Kitsap 11 - Richland 9 Kirkland 10 - West Seattle 1 Now for the fun stuff - Saturday night saw the Block Party in downtown Othellow. They had bands, dance troups, dunk tanks, splash-bounce houses, and belief it or not, a mechanical bull that the kids (yes players) got to try their hand at. There was a biergarten with cornhole and other games and the whole town was invited out to meet the Little Leaguers! (Jim Portugal, if you have a dropbox account I'll upload a ton of pics for you regarding the party(ies) and tournament - we even have drone footage. And the local papers and press are here.
