Tournament draws for LL State Tournament

All, Things are progressing normally now that we have a site for the LL State tournament. Asotin County will be hosting, and the fields will be open to sign off books on the 16th. Scheduled game starts will be around 10:00 AM Saturday - they have three fields to play on and lights. so we should be able to stay on track. I am resending the draws to make sure everyone go them. Update State LL Tournament (12u)

Hi All, I can finally report that I have a site for the 12 year old tournament this year. Sheesh what a hassle. Because there is little confidence in the State’s decision making process regarding COVID, many leagues in my District were afraid to start registrations. (Thanks Dist 8 for that great example of how you worked with King county/Seattle to get your process approved! That really helped. ) When the year started I had one league that had committed to the State tournament for LL division in District 13. Then, according to them because of COVID, they were unwilling to go to the city and businesses in the city to discuss and get support for the tournament. They didn’t want to get everyone stirred up only to have the tournament cancelled. This occurred around the last week in December/First week in January. We had our District meeting and Deer Park decided they could do it. After 2-3 meetings with the president they decided to go to the City officials (their fields are owned by the city)… After two meetings with the City they agreed they could do it. Then a third meeting was held, and two days later the city decided they couldn’t get the fields ready in time or be ready for the tournament. I got the message 24 hours after I told you we could do Deer Park. So I had to embarrassingly report that Deer Park had backed out. They too also had reservations about holding the tournament because of sketchy details on COVID policy – but thought they would risk it until the city said they didn’t have the resources/time to get the fields in shape. So I started looking in District 5. I had originally had 3-4 leagues in Dist 5 interested. When I started pressing for commitments 3 backed out immediately and one league is unlikely to even charter this year, citing COVID and it’s higher than expected impact on their town. SO… I was left with one candidate who confirmed this morning that they will take the tournament and run with it. The good news is: A. They own their own fields B. Their fields are in excellent shape and designed specifically for 12u LL C. They have lights D. They have 3 fields to play on E. They have good parking, concessions, and amenities F. They have experience in putting on State level tournaments G. They have volunteers Asotin County Little League in Clarkston is able, ready, and willing to host the State LL Tournament. I go down in a week or two to help get them kicked off in their preparations for the tournament. They will need lots of help from the State level, and yes Abby, they will give you a call 😊 And yes they have LOTS of Golf Courses – 4 to be exact… And Idaho is wide open which is about a mile across a bridge, and Clarkston is very relaxed in their COVID posture. It may not be as fancy as the tournament in Sedro-Woolley but who can measure up to Mr. West? Unless the majority of you object, I will publish that as the location of the tournament. Janice, That is correct. Since the regular season chartered division doesn’t matter for all-stars and since Senior Division covers all of the age range there is no reason for us to charter for both. The only prior down side was that 12 year-olds weren’t eligible for Seniors in regular season without a waiver. Now even they could be included, if they had the talent and wanted to play, without a waiver needed. So the age range for Seniors covers the whole group and that give us the most flexibility. Good Morning Fellow DAs, I had a parent reach out to me saying that he has a Softball Seniors team ready to go for the 2021 Little League season. This surprised me as its been at least 10 years since District 8 had a Seniors team, and we've done very little to advertise the program. Question - Are any of you aware of your leagues fielding a Seniors team this year? And if not, could you pass the word on? Change in Venue for State

All, After 3 meetings with the mayor and city folks in Deer Park, they don't think they can get the fields together in time for the tournament. After yesterday's meeting they said they could but today they said they couldn't. I'll move it to District 5 as we have 3 venues begging for it in 5 - sorry for the hassles. All, Finally - District 5/13 are moving to phase 2 - about half of our leagues took the Seattle plan from last week and modified it and have sent it on to their health authorities, maybe we can start practicing and playing next week! JP DA 5/13

State Major's Tournament

Hi All, I am sending this message to get some feedback as we start finalizing things for the State Tournament for the Majors. I need your input ASAP. Here is my thinking: We have a league in District 13 that is interested in hosting the tournament. I have also attached a Google Earth file so you can see where the fields are. right across from the High School in Deer Park. They host a big wooden bat tournament each year, so they have the understanding of how to put on a good tournament. I am gonna ask Jim Wheat for some of his helpers name and phones numbers so they can help teach the folks in Deer Park about putting on a good Little League Tournament. My reasoning for leaving the tournament in District 13 instead of sending it down to District 5 is that for years District 13 kind of "languished". There is little interest in doing any more than what is absolutely necessary for Little League here and the attitudes of the presidents is poor. they seem VERY defeated. So a good state tournament where they can all pitch-in and get reconnected to all things Little League may help Little League in the Spokane area in general (otherwise I have three leagues in District 5 chomping at the bit to host the 12 year olds). I think holding the 12u Tournament in Spokane/surrounding area would help LL here tremendously. I have two areas that are talking to me about starting new leagues in the Spokane area and this may be the thing that moves them to get on board.. Deer Park is a small town. It's about 15-20 minutes North of Spokane. Finding hotel rooms would have to be a "Spokane" thing.they have a couple of "lake resorts" , but no major hotel chains in the area. but the wooden bat folks that come their tournament each year house/stay in Spokane and play in Deer Park. Deer Park also doesn't come to Districts at all because they turn their league into a bunch of travel teams after regular season. As part of the "approval" process of letting Deer Park host the tournament, I required that they send at least three teams to Districts this year. Normally there are 2-3 leagues at Districts in Spokane, when their should be 7-8. So they agreed to that. and IF I can get them to come to Districts, I can also get Liberty Lake or Pend Oreille to commit as well I think. Besides the hotel situation, they only have two fields to play on. (They have plenty of practice fields, but two playing fields). They are properly lit so night games could pick up the slack from only having two fields. They have plenty of parking. Concessions shouldn't be a problem. Seating is an issue as they only have small bleachers behind home plate. People would need to bring their own camp chairs after about the first 25 folks or so on each field. The fields are in an acceptable municipal complex.The High School and AD has agreed to let the league use the school building, practice fields, batting cages and everything else necessary as they want to support the league in anyway possible. The league president is doing a good job of getting volunteers to help out and commit to different things to operate the tournament. I don't think manpower is an issue at this point. The president of the league also has contacted the mayor and a couple of city councilors to discuss what needs to be done, and I am supposed to have a conference call with the mayor to see what they can do to help facilitate the tournament. I have a list for him. That call is supposed to happen this week. I told the league president though - "If everything isn't cool by everyone (including the DA group), by mid Feb, we will probably move the tournament down to District 5. Logistically, I think it is going to be "OK", but we may have to do things like put up temporary fencing for the outfield, or bring in porta-potties to meet the demands of those level of crowds. and so forth. Downtown merchants are on-board, newspaper folks, and they are beginning to talk to local radio and tv to see what the possibilities there are. The league is already starting to figure out fun things for the kids and families to do in the area when not playing, and we are borrowing a couple of ideas from other tournaments I have been to in the state. I am asking you all for your opinion, or insight on trying to host a tournament in a smaller location, and if you think I am not thinking of everything that may be overlooked.
